When Ludhi first got in touch to say she was looking for a photographer who could capture a gender reveal with smoke bombs I jumped at the chance! After organising everything with her I then had a phone call with her partner Mike, who told me that he was planning to propose right after the gender reveal, and checked I could photograph the proposal too. Absolutely!
We met at Reddish Vale park, along with around 20 members of their family and friends. Ludhi is from Brazil and has family there and in Canada, so she set up a livestream so they could watch too. She handed me two bags, one with blue smoke bombs and one with pink, and an envelope with the baby’s gender inside.
After getting them set up in place I handed each Ludhi and Mike a smoke bomb (after checking which colour they needed!), and then got to photographing their reactions as they found out… It’s a boy!
After a lot of cheering, hugging and kissing Mike got down on one knee, and she said yes
They sent their friends on to the restaurant where they planned to have their meal that evening and we went round to the Lake and took some gorgeous sunset shots there. Beautiful!
Tips: If anyone is looking through this gallery for inspiration and hoping to do the same then I would definitely advise getting smoke bombs that release slower rather than faster. It’s easy for the smoke to obscure the couple’s faces, especially if it’s a windy day.
